Safe NFT marketplace: checklist before buying

•

What a safe NFT marketplace can and cannot do

A safe NFT marketplace reduces interface and contract risk but cannot guarantee the authenticity, value or liquidity of every collection. Review three separate layers: the domain and application, the NFT contract on the selected chain and the exact request sent to your wallet. A legitimate platform may display an imitation collection. An authentic collection may have mutable metadata. An innocent-looking signature can grant broad authority. Marketplace reputation is the start of verification, not the conclusion.

Verify the domain, application and links

Open the marketplace from a checked bookmark or the project’s official site, not from direct messages, ads or sponsored search results. Read the complete domain and redirects before connecting a wallet. Phishing sites copy interfaces, collections and balances while requesting different signatures. Install extensions and mobile apps only from the correct developer and store listing. A practical crypto security process against phishing and drainers limits how often the main wallet is exposed to unverified links.

The contract address identifies the collection

Names, tickers and images can be copied. The decisive identifier is the contract on the correct blockchain. Compare it with the official project site, a block explorer and consistent public channels. Do not rely only on a marketplace badge; confirm that it covers the same collection and network. For recent mints, identify who can issue more tokens, change the base URI, pause transfers or upgrade the contract. Verified source code makes logic visible but does not prove that the design is secure.

Check the individual token’s provenance

Review token ID, creator, previous transfers and the wallets involved. A stolen NFT can be authentic while still becoming disputed or blocked by a platform. Circular transfers and unusual prices can manufacture activity. Determine whether metadata and media live onchain, on IPFS or on a project-controlled server. Central hosting can disappear or change. Technical provenance also does not prove copyright ownership: a token may point to a work uploaded without the creator’s permission.

Understand every wallet request

Before signing, determine whether the action is login, order creation, approval or transfer. An offchain signature may create an executable order; an onchain transaction can authorize an operator to move every NFT in a collection. Read the spender, contract, chain, expiry and assets. If the wallet displays unreadable data, stop and inspect it with another tool. Never sign to fix an alleged support problem. Real support does not need a transfer-capable signature to inspect an account.

Approvals, operators and revocation

ERC-721 and ERC-1155 allow owners to authorize marketplaces and operators. Approval may cover one token or every item from a collection. It is convenient for listing but remains active until revoked or replaced. After testing a new contract or ending a campaign, review and revoke unnecessary crypto approvals. Revocation costs gas and cannot recover an asset already transferred. It reduces future exposure; it does not undo a completed compromise.

Separate storage and transaction wallets

Keeping valuable NFTs in the wallet used for experimental mints, airdrops and unfamiliar sites increases the maximum loss. A storage wallet can interact rarely and send only required assets to a transaction wallet. Separation does not help when the seed phrase or device is compromised, but it limits risky approvals and signatures. Consider a hardware wallet and tested backups for meaningful collections. Do not copy destinations only from transaction history: wallet address poisoning attacks exploit that habit.

Price, liquidity and wash trading

Floor price is the lowest asking price, not a guaranteed exit. Examine unique buyers, bid distribution, net volume and ownership concentration. Trades among related wallets can inflate volume and average price. To estimate liquidity, inspect executable bids for the individual token and depth across several items. Royalty policies may alter incentives for creators and traders. An NFT remains illiquid even when a marketplace interface assigns it a live valuation or shows a recent high-priced sale.

Custody, escrow and order contracts

Some marketplaces leave assets in the owner’s wallet and settle signed orders; others use escrow, bridges or specialized contracts. Identify where the NFT sits during a listing or auction and who can upgrade the contract. Review audits, bug bounties, multisigs and timelocks without treating them as guarantees. A marketplace can disable its interface while signed orders remain executable onchain. When cancelling a listing, check whether cancellation requires a transaction or whether nonce invalidation and expiry are sufficient.

Safe NFT marketplace checklist

Confirm domain, chain, contract, token ID and creator. Review provenance, metadata storage and administrative powers. Examine real bids, owner distribution and signs of artificial trades. Simulate the transaction, read each signature and use a separated wallet with limited funds. Afterward, review approvals and open orders. A safe NFT marketplace experience results from repeating these checks. No badge, influencer endorsement or headline volume can replace verifying the exact transaction you are about to authorize.
